PELLA, Iowa — Central College will conduct a softball pitching clinic Jan. 7 with a skills clinic set for Feb. 25.
Both Saturday clinics will be staged in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse and will be led by Central head coach George Wares, associate head coach Alicia O’Brien and their staff. Wares is the winningest coach in NCAA Division III history with a 909-302-3 record in 27 seasons, with 23 NCAA tournament berths and four national championships.
The Jan. 7 pitching clinic includes a session for players in grades 5-8 from 9-11:30 a.m., with an afternoon session for players in grades 9-12 set for 1-4 p.m. Cost for the morning session is $35 while the afternoon session price is $50. Both clinics will be limited to 25 participants.
Veteran pitching coach Gary Grimes will be the featured instructor along with former Central pitcher Katie Tenboer and current Central hurlers. Grimes, in his second year as Central’s pitching coach, previously served as pitching coach at Drake University and Grand View University. He also was the head high school coach at Colfax and Newton.
The Feb. 25 skills clinic is for players in grades 8-12, with a session from 9 a.m.-noon and another from 1-3 p.m. The clinic will cover baserunning, hitting, bunting, slapping and infield/outfield work as well as unique instruction on mental skills development. The clinic is limited to 50 participants.
Cost for the day is $75 and includes lunch.
