Iowa's Best Set To Take On Bent Tree

On July 23, the 108th Iowa Amateur Championship will kick off at Bent Tree Golf Club in Council Bluffs. The Championship will be contested on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the links-style track in the Loess Hills of southwestern Iowa.
Though 2009 champion Ben Herrera is now a professional and will not defend his title, five former Iowa Amateur champions are in the field at Bent Tree. The five, along with their championship year are: Mike Oimoen from Clear Lake (2008), Jared Walahoski (2007) and Jon Brown (2006), both of Urbandale, Clive's Brian Verduyn (2005), and four-time champion Mike McCoy form West Des Moines.
While a favorite is very difficult to define in such a stacked field, three-time IGA major champ Jon Brown seems to be closest thing. This year, Brown has won his seventh Des Moines City Championship and his fourth Iowa Masters title. In addition, Brown paired with Ty Stewart to win the 2008 IGA Four-Ball Championship, which was the last IGA Championship contested at Bent Tree.

Herrera Shatters Records, Wins by 10

Ben Herrera birdied the final two holes on Wednesday to finish the 107th Iowa Amateur in record fashion. The Iowa State star posted a 14-under par, 202 total. It was good enough for a ten shot win over four-time runner up Mike McCoy. The 107th playing of the Iowa Amateur was contested at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo.
Herrera broke the record for most under-par in the Iowa Amateur with his 14-under total. The state's most prestigious championshp has been played in both a 54 and 72 hole format. The previous record was 13-under by Greg Tebbutt at Finkbine GC in 1982, which was a 72-hole championship. Gene Elliott's win in 2000 at Ottumwa CC at 11-under was the previous 54-hole record. Herrera's ten shot margin of victory also broke the previous record of eight held by Jack Webb in the 1960 Iowa Amateur at Wakonda Club.
GEORGE COMES UP ACES: Iowa Hawkeye golfer Bradley George of Marion made the first hole-in-one of his life on the par-3 8th hole on Tuesday during the second round of the Iowa Amateur. George had to wait an entire day to make another. George aced the 13th hole during his final round! He used an 8-iron on #8 and a 6-iron on #13.
