Des Moines "Caps" Season With Midwest High School Hockey League Tournament Title
AMES, Iowa – The 2010 Midwest High School Hockey League regular season champion also became the postseason tournament champions when the Des Moines Capitals shutout the Kansas City Jr. Outlaws, 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena in Ames. The two teams battled for the top of the MHSHL during the regular season and in the end the post season was a carbon copy of the regular season. This was the third meeting this season and the Capitals, though always close won all three against the Jr.Outlaws.
Goalie Derek Temple returned for the Capitals after missing the semifinal game with an ankle injury and was solid as for the second straight season the title game winning goalie posted a shutout. Temple stopped all 23 shots he faced while being aided by strong defensive play in front of him throughout the game. He also stopped a penalty shot in the third period.
Defense was solid for both teams in the opening period as the teams played to a scoreless tie. Kyle Collins broke the ice with a goal at 1:13 of the second period assisted by Ryan Betters and Travis Merritt. The Jr. Outlaws just missed on one scoring opportunity as during one flurry at the Capitals net as the puck was swept away from crossing the line.
The spotlight shined on Jordan Garrison-Nickerson who was part of both of the Capitals goals in the third period, scoring the second goal and assisting on the third goal scored by Joseph Anson. Anson, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Capitals a semifinal victory over Mason City, 4-3 was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
For the Jr. Outlaws, Jacob Pope stopped 18 of 21 shots he faced.
The Kansas City Stars and Mason City tied for third during the regular season but it was the Stars that would claim third place in the tournament with a 4-2 win over the Warriors.
The Des Moines Capitals will continue play as they will represent the Midwest High School Hockey League at the U.S. High School Nationals Tournament in Chicago.
