Mason City Sweeps Weekend; Quad Cities Showing Improvement in Midwest High School Hockey League Action
DES MOINES, Iowa -It was a big weekend for Mason City while Quad Cities showed that records can be deceiving in Midwest High School Hockey League action. The Mohawks swept their three games over the weekend and now have won seven straight and find themselves tied with the Kansas City Jr. Outlaws for second place in the MHSHL.
It was two out of three this weekend for Quad Cities who sits near the bottom of the league standings but may be showing some signs of marked improvement with a tough 5-4 loss to the Jr. Outlaws on Saturday then turned around and won the Sunday meeting, 4-3 in overtime. The Blues also posted a 6-0 shutout of Dubuque earlier in the week.
Both of the Iowa Sports Connection weekly honors go to a Mohawk this week. Justin Metli is the "ISC Player of the Week" helping to lead Macon City to three wins with his 5 goals and 2 assists which moved him into 15th in the league in scoring with 40 points on the season. The ISC Goalie of the Week" honors go to Metli's teammate, Drake Lundeen who won both of his games in goal, stopping 52 of the 55 shots he faced and improving his record to 11-3-0 with a 2.07 goals against average and a .916 save percentage.
On the schedule this week look for the Sioux Falls trip to Kansas City to be a big one as the Flyers face both the Jr. Outlaws and Stars in key road tilts. League-leading Des Moines Capitals head into this weeks action without a loss in the last 15 games (14-0-1) and have allowed only 41 goals in 28 games. Waterloo is next, allowing 53 goals in 27 games.
The Kansas City Jr., Outlaws lead the league in scoring with 138 goals in 27 games with the Kansas City Stars right behind with 132 goals.
Statistically in the MHSHL, Corbin Belling (Des Moines Oak Leafs) moved into a tie with A.J. Emmons (Kansas City Stars) for the lead in overall scoring with 63 points each. Belling leads the league with 40 goals scored while Emmons is the assist leader with 37. Colton Kramer (Sioux City) is third in scoring with 60 points and second in goals scored with 38 while Connor Hanlon (Kansas City Stars) is second in assists with 34 on the season.
Between the pipes, Andrew Wuttke (Mason City) won his only game in goals this week and continues to lead the league in goals against average at 0.91 per game. Wuttke is 9-1-0 with three shutouts. The Capitals Derek Temple posted his fourth shutout of the season and is second in that category behind Landon Weber (Waterloo) who has five shutouts. Temple is also second in victories with a 17-1-1 record. Keeghan Nelson (Sioux Falls) 18-8-0 is the league leader.
Listed below are the results of the past weeks action, this week’s schedule, the MHSHL standings and the statistical leaders of the MHSHL season in both the varsity and junior varsity levels and through February 7th, 2010.
